After clerking on the Supreme Court, JJ decided to step off the appellate path and become a trial lawyer. During his time in practice, he has argued dispositive motions; taken, defended, and prepared witnesses for depositions; drafted briefs at every stage of litigation from pleadings through post-trial motions; managed multiple trial teams; and second-chaired numerous directs and crosses of fact and expert witnesses across multiple jury trials in state and federal court.

Given his academic background, JJ particularly enjoys trying to explain complicated science and antitrust concepts in a way that will resonate with jurors. His Harvard economics thesis was an econometric analysis of Appalachian economic development–he’s from eastern Kentucky originally–which employed the same statistical tools used to analyze epidemiology and market effects. As a result, he enjoys working to prepare expert witnesses for trial, and figuring out how to cross-examine the opponent’s experts.

In law school, JJ served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal, won the award for best oral advocate in Yale’s moot-court competition, and (best of all) got to know his future wife playing trivia together at the Yale grad-student bar each week. Even in law school, he was eager to do trial work. In 2014, he and his two teammates won the National Championship at the National Trial Competition, a nationwide law school mock-trial tournament whose final round “jury” consisted of 25 of the country’s top trial lawyers.

Before law school, JJ was a consultant at McKinsey & Company. He now lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, son, and daughter. Before having children, JJ was an avid fly fisherman. Now on weekends you can find him at the zoo, at the local playground, or boating on the Potomac.
